Overview

Most couples entering a marriage have discussed the wedding in far more detail than the marriage. Money, in-laws, work, children, faith, where you will live and whose career bends first are usually assumed rather than agreed — and an assumption only reveals itself as an assumption once it has been contradicted, which is generally at the worst possible moment.

Premarital counselling is structured, practical and time-limited. It is not an examination of whether you should marry; it is a guided run through the decisions a marriage will ask of you, so the two of you find out now where you already agree, where you differ, and which differences will need a working arrangement rather than a resolution.

Consider this if

  • Engaged or planning to marry, and wanting to start with clear expectations
  • A subject the two of you keep circling and never quite finish
  • Families with different expectations of how the marriage should run
  • A previous relationship or marriage that you do not want to repeat

What it does

Premarital Counseling

Assumptions surfaced

The things each of you took as obvious get said out loud, which is the only way to find out whether they were shared.

A way to disagree

Every couple disagrees. Learning how to do it without it escalating matters more than agreeing on everything.

Practical agreements

Money, household roles, time with each family, children and careers — discussed as decisions rather than left to drift.

A neutral room

A third person present who has no stake in the outcome and no loyalty to either family.

Inside a session

  1. Separately

A short individual conversation with each of you first, so nothing important goes unsaid out of politeness.

  2. Map

Together, we work through the standard domains — finances, family, work, children, faith, intimacy, living arrangements.

  3. Practise

One live disagreement, worked through in the room, with the structure that keeps it a discussion.

  4. Agree

What you have decided, what remains open, and the conversation you will schedule for six months from now.

Common questions

Does this mean something is wrong?

No. Most couples who come are doing well and want to stay that way. Counselling before a marriage is preparation, in the same sense that a physiotherapy assessment before a race is preparation rather than treatment.

What if we discover a serious difference?

Then you have discovered it now, with support and time, rather than in year three under pressure. Very few differences are fatal; unspoken ones cause far more damage than named ones.

Will you tell us whether to marry?

No. That decision is entirely yours. Our work is to make sure it is made with the relevant conversations had rather than postponed.

Is what we say confidential?

Yes, within the usual legal limits around risk of serious harm. What is said in an individual session is not reported back to your partner without your agreement.

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. What is right for you is decided at assessment. If your symptoms are severe, worsening quickly, or follow an injury, seek medical care first.

Not sure this is the right one?

That is what the first consultation is for. Ninety minutes of assessment before anything is recommended — including recommending nothing.
