Overview

Couples rarely arrive because of the argument they had last week. They arrive because of the same argument, in different costumes, for the past four years. The content changes — money, the phone, her mother, his hours — and the shape does not: one pursues, one withdraws, both end up further from what they actually wanted, which was usually to be understood.

The work is on the pattern rather than the incident. We slow the cycle down until both of you can see your own part in it, which is the point at which it becomes changeable. Both partners are heard fully; neither is assigned blame. Where the distress is severe, or where there is a mental health or safety concern, that is assessed and addressed directly rather than treated as a communication problem.

Consider this if

  • The same argument recurring, whatever the apparent subject
  • Long silences, or a politeness that has replaced closeness
  • One of you pursuing, the other withdrawing, and both of you exhausted
  • Trust damaged by a betrayal, a secret, or a long accumulation of small things
  • Living well as parents or housemates, but no longer as a couple

What it does

Marriage & Relationship Counseling

The pattern named

Seeing the cycle from outside it — what triggers it, what each of you does next, and where it can be interrupted.

Both heard

Structured turns, so the quieter account gets the same room as the louder one.

Repair after rupture

A worked process for the aftermath of a betrayal or a long resentment, rather than an agreement never to mention it.

Something to use

Two or three concrete tools you take home, because the change has to happen in your kitchen, not in this room.

Inside a session

  1. History

How the relationship began, what it was like before, and when the current pattern started.

  2. Individually

One private session each, so anything hard to say in front of your partner still gets said.

  3. Work

Joint sessions on the cycle itself — slowing it down, naming it, and interrupting it in the room.

  4. Review

What has changed, what has not, and whether to continue, space out or close.

Common questions

Will you take sides?

No. A counsellor who takes a side has stopped being useful to either of you. Being fair is not the same as being neutral about behaviour that causes harm, and where that is present it is named.

My partner will not come. Can I come alone?

Yes. Individual work on a relationship is genuinely useful — you are half of the pattern, and change in one half changes the whole. Many partners join later once it stops feeling like a summons.

Is this a last resort before separating?

It does not have to be, and it works better when it is not. Some couples do use it to separate more decently, particularly where children are involved, and that is a legitimate outcome of the work.

What about abuse?

Couple counselling is not appropriate where there is ongoing violence, coercion or intimidation, because it is not safe to speak freely. We screen for this, and if it is present we will say so and help arrange the right support instead.

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. What is right for you is decided at assessment. If your symptoms are severe, worsening quickly, or follow an injury, seek medical care first.

Not sure this is the right one?

That is what the first consultation is for. Ninety minutes of assessment before anything is recommended — including recommending nothing.
